Rockstar Games Confirms Unauthorized Access Leading to Grand Theft Auto VI Footage Leak

Rockstar Games, the renowned developer behind the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) series, recently acknowledged falling victim to a "network intrusion." This breach resulted in the illicit download of early footage for the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI.

The unauthorized third party gained access to "confidential information from our systems," though the extent of the breach remains unclear, limited to the early game footage without apparent compromise of additional data.

Over the weekend, a user identified as "teapotuberhacker" leaked a substantial trove of data on GTAForums, featuring approximately 90 videos showcasing clips from the upcoming game. Interestingly, this individual claimed responsibility for the recent Uber breach as well¹².

The hacker's motive seems to revolve around negotiation, stating on 4chan, "I will leak more if Rockstar/Take2 doesn't pay me."

The leaked footage unveiled various facets of the game's development, including animation tests, level layouts, and gameplay demonstrations. It also seemingly confirmed long-rumored features, such as a playable female character and the modern-day setting of Vice City, GTA's equivalent of Miami³⁴.

The leaked content swiftly spread across social media platforms, prompting Rockstar to issue takedown orders on Twitter and YouTube²⁵.

In response, Rockstar expressed deep disappointment, stating on Monday, "We are extremely disappointed to have any details of our next game shared with you all in this way." Despite the setback, the company affirmed its commitment to continuing work on the next Grand Theft Auto installment, pledging an experience that exceeds player expectations.

Earlier this year, Rockstar confirmed the game's development, with industry insiders speculating a release date in 2024 or 2025. Notably, GTA V, the preceding installment, has sold over 170 million copies since its 2013 release, solidifying its status as one of the most successful video games of all time.
