OpenAI, a leader in artificial intelligence (AI), has been at the forefront of addressing the misuse of its technology. Since the start of 2024, the company has successfully disrupted over 20 operations and deceptive networks that aimed to exploit its platform for harmful purposes. These activities ranged from debugging malware to creating fake social media accounts. Addressing Malicious Use of AI

OpenAI revealed that threat actors continuously evolve in their use of AI, experimenting with the platform to create content for fake accounts, articles, and even profile pictures. However, the company stressed that it has not observed significant advancements in the creation of new malware or the building of viral audiences through these malicious attempts.

In addition, OpenAI intercepted operations that involved generating social media content, some of which targeted elections in various countries, including the U.S., Rwanda, India, and the European Union. Despite these efforts, none of the deceptive campaigns gained substantial traction or sustained attention.

Notable Cyber Operations

Several cyber operations were detailed by OpenAI, shedding light on how adversaries are attempting to exploit the platform:

  • SweetSpecter: A China-based group that used OpenAI’s services for reconnaissance, vulnerability research, and scripting support. They also attempted phishing attacks against OpenAI staff but were unsuccessful.

  • Cyber Av3ngers: Linked to the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), this group utilized AI models for research on programmable logic controllers, critical in industrial automation.

  • Storm-0817: An Iranian threat actor involved in debugging malware and scraping data from social media platforms like Instagram, as well as translating profiles into Persian.

Beyond these examples, OpenAI also took action against two influence operations, A2Z and Stop News, which used AI-generated content for English and French-speaking audiences. These networks posted manipulated articles and tweets, often accompanied by AI-generated images to attract attention.

Additional Threats and Influence Campaigns

OpenAI identified two other networks, Bet Bot and Corrupt Comment, that utilized its platform to generate user conversations on X (formerly Twitter), leading users to gambling sites. Another operation, Storm-2035, an Iranian covert influence campaign, was banned by OpenAI for using AI to produce politically charged content about the upcoming U.S. elections.

Cybersecurity experts have raised concerns about the potential of AI models to spread misinformation, particularly in the political sphere. AI-generated personas, targeted emails, and fabricated campaign content are just some of the ways that AI can be misused to influence public opinion. This capability could lead to widespread misinformation that targets individuals based on their political preferences.
